African Democracy
|
Through the study of African democracies, FOCIS seeks to help create a deeper understanding of politics in Africa, exploring theories of civil conflict, democratization and democratic institutions. Accordingly, FOCIS, the Eugene Applebaum Chair in Community Engagement and the Irvin D. Reid Honors College are working to present the African Democracy Project, which combines study abroad opportunities and intensive seminar courses focusing on citizenship, government systems and language to give the public a greater awareness of how emerging democracies and other troubled areas of continuing strife and social upheaval in the world must balance conflicting interests in peace with mutual respect. Recognizing that the world relies more and more on electronic devices for their information and communication needs, products of the African Democracy Project will include Web-based communications – student blogs and a video documentary that will enlighten, entertain and educate a wider audience on the exciting democratic process now happening across sub-Saharan Africa. FOCIS lauched the African Democracy Project with African Democracy Project: Mozambique (ADPM) in October 2009.
