About Allan Gilmour

Allan D. Gilmour was unanimously elected by the Board of Governors on January 18, 2011 to serve as Wayne State University's 11th President. He served previously as Wayne State's interim president from August 2010, beginning a noteworthy encore career.

President Gilmour spent most of his first career at Ford Motor Company, from which he retired in 1995 as vice chairman. He rejoined the company as vice chairman in 2002, and retired again in 2005, having overseen Finance, the General Auditor’s office, Human Resources, Corporate Affairs and Corporate Strategy. He also led Ford’s financial services sector—Ford Motor Credit and Hertz Corporation. Gilmour is chairman of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan and serves on the boards of the Detroit Regional Chamber, Business Leaders for Michigan, Downtown Detroit Partnership, the Detroit Zoo, and Citizens Research Council.

Previously, he was a member of the boards of Ford Motor Co., DTE Energy Company, US West, MediaOne Group, Prudential Financial, Dow Chemical, Whirlpool and Universal Technical Institute. He also was chairman and a trustee of Henry Ford Health System and its foundation and a trustee of the University of Detroit Mercy, the Detroit Institute of Arts, St. Johnsbury (Vt.) Academy, and the Cultural Alliance of Southeastern Michigan.

Gilmour was raised on his family’s dairy farm in Barnet, Vt. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Harvard University and a master of business administration from the University of Michigan.
